Local walks in hills

New Zealand is a hilly little country.

Years ago I passed an American woman on a hillside; she was out of breath and leaning against a rock and saying: 'up, up, everywhere in this goddamn country is up'. Tee hee.

We have big hills in the east that build into mountain ranges, and they still have a dusting of snow. Closer to us we've done a couple of walks lately: one along a steep escarpment that is part of the national north-south trail Te Araroa, and the other in a Department of Conservation (DoC) working farm with walking and biking tracks.

On the escarpment walk, looking south at Kapiti Island. We only got about 2km along and got turned around by a track worker. A slip has closed the track.

So we retraced steps and went up another short track and had a picnic at the highest point, and then back to the car.

On another day, at the DoC farm (Whareroa Farm), we headed up through a paddock and came down through bush, native tree plantings, gorse (of course), and a gum tree forest. Looking seaward, it was a bit mizzly. Track on the far left is the one we came up on.

Heading down and looking north along State Highway 1, Raumati and our house in the distance.

Some lovely big trees at Whareroa Farm.

Arthritic toe didn't like the uphill paddock climb (prefers nicely formed steps if it MUST), so end of day, feet up with Deep Heat and Glenfiddich.
