We've had a couple of good jolts lately.
GeoNet has all the info, instantly. So we rush to the phone after the shaking stops, making a guess about the size of the quake.
This one was a 5.9 last week.
Centre was Taumaranui, that's mid North Island, and the coloured squares record where people felt it. Darker is more reports, so it was rocking in Wellington and felt over a wide area of NZ. Sometimes you can hear them coming and I heard this one, like a truck rumbling outside, for a good 10 seconds before the shaking started. Mish was outside and didn't feel it - shaking is much more obvious inside a building.
Most quakes are short, usually a few seconds, and most are too weak to be felt.
GeoNet is fabulous. Gives us the size, depth, location, etc, and eruption alerts. Never a dull moment.
