Finally. Saw a couple in the harbour this morning as I drove to work. Pulled over toot sweet, jumped out sans camera and walked parallel to them back along the road as they headed towards the city. Mother and calf maybe - woohoo! Small orca but still big black smooth beings: surfacing and down and surfacing and rolling down. Much bigger than dolphins.
Heard later that three orca cruised right into Oriental Bay and the breakwater next to Freyberg Pool (visitors may remember that spot as our favourite ice cream shop in Wellington).
There's a permanent pod living in Cook Strait, and they are often seen around Wellington's south coast, but we've always just missed them. Not today.
Made my day.
