Moved two small lancewood trees today. They were planted in the wrong position right beside the house about 10 years ago - they had to go. So we've had a crack at moving them - to the park. A bit of guerilla planting today.
Mish doing the exploratory dig.
We had no idea what the root system would look like, or if they would cope with a move. Got them out with minimum root cutting, so they might live. We've given it a shot. It was that or mulch. It could still be mulch.
Our border with the park is steep. There are council plantings there, but it's all overgrown with kikuyu grass and uncared for. Plant and forget.
Ta dah!
Cleared a couple of spots and dug in some good soil and compost. It's all sand there of course, and water repellant too. We've had a lot of rain in the last couple of weeks but it was dry under the grass. Created platforms and banked the planting hole up on the downside with big Te Horo driftwood pieces and rocks. The hose reaches which is great. We have to squeeeeeze through our wire fence to get into the park, then scramble over tree roots on the steep bank, so didn't want to bucket water.
Here's the other lancewood moved today.
Two shifted; two to go. They're a weird tree, they look like they're dead until the adult growth arrives, which is happening to the one on the left here.
