Took a three day trip to Napier just before Easter. Interesting drive north east of here; it's about four hours to Napier on the other side of the island. Because of road works and slips and closed roads we took long detours through farm country and narrow back country roads, and along some very quiet scenic roads.
The tail end of a cyclone was hitting the upper part of the island but we missed most of the rain and wind and just got the big seas and the weird sky colour.
Late afternoon view from our motel.
He's picking his moment - and then in he went, everyone on the beach watching. He was the only surfer. Wonder why?
And looking north to Cape Kidnappers and the gannet colony. The road out to the birds at the end (we've been out there on a tractor tour) is also closed due to a big landslide a couple of years ago. The slip took two walkers into the sea but they survived.
Napier is art deco city, rebuilt in record time after the nationally famous 1931 earthquake that levelled the city. It has some lovely art deco buildings and glass and artworks around town, all beautifully looked after.
A nice couple of days away and back home before the Easter rush to pick my punkins.
