Rainy cool Friday - a nice day to stroll around one of the biggest nature reserves near us, at Waikanae.
From the lookout tower, divebombed by swallows who are nesting there. Looking west to the escarpment that runs parallel to the beach for kilometres and the Tararua range in the distance.
It didn't rain and it wasn't so cool walking through the trees and around the lakes so we had a pleasant 2.3km meander. Scored a couple of teensy red beech seedlings, now transplanted into wee pots at home and heading for a fabulous bonsai future.
Daddy black swan. The teenagers are off doing their own thing, but together. There's an aquatic fern across the water (in light green), and the rusty spots are the fern reacting to sunlight. Eventually the lake will go all red.
Like this other pond is doing.
There are some lovely solid old trees in the reserve, big tree ferns, and mighty tall flax spikes about to flower. Tui will be delighted when these open.
Then, late lunch at Waikanae Beach in a cafe garden.
A pleasant green day.
