Kaikoura trip

Mish organised a South Island trip for my birthday and we ferried it to Blenheim for a few nights with Sue and Phil. They took us out to Havelock for a walk and lunch; mussels a specialty in this part of the world.
Sue and I seriously checking out a cormorant nest as we're level with the nesting  trees and the chick is going off as food has arrived.

Sue gave us her sporty Fiat so (after we folded ourselves into the space a few inches from the ground) we put the top down and headed down the new road (post 2016 earthquake) to the coast town of Kaikoura. This place changed since we were here last - 2000 - every accent on the street. Still delicious fish and chips, but the queue is out the door.

Mish found great accommodation just north of the town. Here's me in my Hare Krishna outfit  looking like I am well into the sixties (bugger, I am) at the breakfast and evening drinks spot.

Terns on the beach beneath our accommodation.Wild coast, loads of seals with pups.

Had a lovely walk on the track around Kaikoura peninsula. It's hard to be precise but most of this white rock came up several meters just after midnight on 14 November2016. That was a 7.8 shake and it wrecked the main road and rail line between Picton and Kaikoura. The road works go on due to major slips and buckled road and a coastline that came up rather a lot. But everyone is cheerful as you go through at 30kph and the new road is terrific.

Mish with a very old rimu tree (500 years+) on a walk outside Kaikoura. Saved from loggers as the area was next to a school and they used it as an outdoor classroom, late 1800s. Inspired. Other big old trees saved too and now it is a reserve.
