Saturday. Took the van for a spin up state highway 1 to the outlet shopping town of Otaki, and then had a wee picnic on Te Horo Beach. That's our driftwood collection beach; we've snaffled some fabulous logs from there. The sea is warm and very soft at the moment, luscious. Lots of fishing and swimming and lounging in the water and boating and frolicking on the sand all up and down the coast, even in the big gravelly rivers.
We could see three snowy mountains from Te Horo Beach, south, west and north. The South Island mountain we see from our place, Tapu, still has some snow; the totally white cone of Egmont/Taranaki sitting way out in the ocean (that's the way the island curves, makes it look like it is in the sea), and bulky Ruapehu in the middle of the island with loads of snow still on it.
Came home with strawberries to make some jam tomorrow - yum.
