Zealandia: bird & animal sanctuary in Wellington city

Went for a walk through the sanctuary today. It's an old city reservoir, transformed by inspired bureaucrats. Yes, it's true. Two dams and acres of bush have been fenced to keep predators out. Huge success story for conservation. The plan is to restore the area to pre human conditions; that's planned to take 500 years and it's underway.

Glorious with bird life - the big kaka parrots, saddlebacks, weka, kiwis - plus lizards ( the prehistoric tuatara), frogs, and weta motels. It was a cool day so we had a lovely four hour stroll along tracks through big trees, with birds going off around us. You can hear some here: http://www.visitzealandia.com/site/zealandia_home/
